The 31-year-old middle-order batsman is hoping to use the match, which gets under way at Colombo Cricket Club Ground on Tuesday, to persuade the selectors to hand him a recall for the three-Test series against the English next month.
He said: "I am delighted to be named captain in this game as it gives me a good opportunity to get back into the Test side.
"I have been playing the domestic limited-over games and have got off to a good start. I am determined to continue that in the first three-day game.
"England are a very good side and will be very tough opponents.
"The team comprises some experienced players who are on the fringe and this is a good opportunity to display their talent and ability."
