[Video] Mathew Hoggard 4/29 | Sri Lanka Vs England | 1st Test | Day 1 | Kandy 2007/08
"Hoggard was making the ball talk, adjusting faultlessly between left and right handers and England sensed a chance to run through a shocked batting line-up still suffering a hang-over from Australia." said Andrew McGlashan in his bulletin for Cricinfo.
The Lions couldn't have asked for a better Day 1 pitch to bat on.
So with the pitch out of the equation one must pay serious tribute to the English pacemen especially Matthew. He bowled with control and the key to his success was his consistency in hitting a good length.
Thus far the renowned swing bowlers in the game Hoggard(4) and Vaas(1) have picked up the early honours in both innings.
Kandy has historically been a venue where the genuine swing bowlers and the spinners have prospered. That too seems the trend in this match. On a day 2 Kandy wicket Murali will get all the assistance he requires and Vaas will still get some early swing in. There will more than likely be an outcome in this test which way it will go depends on the English batting and the Lankan bowling on Day 2.
